Sleep Number m7 Memory Foam Bed Review

The quality of a good night sleep can depend on many factors: time you go to bed, the room temperature, thoughts on your mind, and the bed you sleep on. For me I’ve always been a night owl. I’ve worked the night shift most of my life and usually head to bed some time around 2-3 a.m. About 10 years ago I purchased a new bed and every other month for the past year I’ve been spinning and flipping the mattress trying to get comfortable. I had ache’s and pains in my hips most nights and almost every morning. I get back ache’s occasionally and slept okay for the most part after falling asleep. When Sleep number contacted me to review the Sleep Number m7 Memory Foam I was so excited. Could an adjustable bed be the answer to a pain free and good night sleep?

The bed was delivered at a time that was convenient for us and we were provided with in-home set up which took about 30 minutes. The delivery men were both courteous and helpful in answering our questions and explained set up as they went along just encase we had to take down the bed in the future to move or reposition.

Hubby and I watched closely as they set the Sleep Number modular frame, the air mattress and foam set up. I had a bed skirt available which they kindly added for me and placed the mattress and foam on top. When set up process was complete the delivery employee went over how to use the Sleep Number Firmness Control system and handed us a book for reading up on the rest of the facts.

1. 12 inch bed with modern styling and soft knit fabric- I love the black modular frame. It sits about standard size off the ground so I’m still able to tuck important things like my slippers and picture storage boxes under the bed. If you have hard wood floors they have pads to put under the legs so you don’t have to worry about them scratching the floor.

2. Exclusive Sleep Number Dual Air Technology lets you adjust firmness on either side of the mattress for your ideal level of comfort using the wireless Sleep number firmness control system-

This is the exciting part. Hubby likes a firm bed and I prefer a pillow soft. Can you imagine trying to compromise on a comfort level in a standard mattress? Customizing comfort level for each of us is as easy as a press of a button. Finding a comfort level magic number requires a few nights or possibly a few weeks of sleep in my case. Either way 2 people who share a bed can have different comfort levels and still share one bed. Score!!

3.  The Sleep Number is naturally contouring to the shape of your body. This relieves pressure points that may other wise be irritated if the bed did not contour and cradle your body shape.  Taking the pressure of  my hips and allow my body to sleep comfortably helps relieve my hip pains as well as my husbands back aches makes me feel like I’m 21 again.

4. The foam mattress is made up of 3 inches of cool fit foam with gel technology giving you a cool soothing sleep surface. This is the first time I’ve ever slept on a foam mattress but I currently have no temperature complaints. Hubby is usually the temperature complainer. He hasn’t expressed that the bed is warmer to sleep in. I personally like a warmer bed but do notice that if I change position that the bed does feel cooler until I lay in that position for a while. I suppose once the warmer weather or mid-life hot flashes hits the cool foam technology will be more noticeable. Hopefully.

Why I feel the sleep number bed is a good investment.

DualAir technology advantage. Hubby prefers a med/soft surface for sleeping. I like a soft to softer surface. With dual air chambers we both can set our side of the bed to the comfort softness or firmness we each desire.  With the mattress contouring to your body it helps relieve those pressure points that might other wise be irritated with sleeping on a mattress that is a set firmness from top to bottom.  As we age our comfort level may change. Adjusting as time goes by will be as easy as using the Sleep Number Firmness Control System.

How the sleep number bed was put together.
Set up takes approximately 30 minutes. The sleep number bed is made of a dual air chamber. It sits on a modular bed frame and is in cased by larger firm foam. These area’s are inside of a soft mattress cover and over laid on the top is the Coolfit gel foam with another mattress cover zipped over the top. (you can see this in the video)

Dual Air mattress feature:
The air mattress are controlled by a remote which is easy to operate. We use the 5 point system to control air entering or exiting the mattress so that we can determine if the comfort level is reached.

Is the motor load or run the whole time the bed is freestanding?
The answer is No. This was one of my concerns. Once the mattress has reached the comfort level the bed is still plugged in but there is no motor running. When switching comfort level you do hear a slight hum, a few clicks and that is all.

TIP: When the bed first arrives you will notice that there is a smell that lingers. Be sure to place a scented fabric softener sheets (we used one on each side) between the mattress and air-chamber. You can also open a window and unzip the top cover to air out the mattress and the room. We unfortunately didn’t do this right away but after we did it took approx. 24-48 hours for the smell to subside.

Updated thoughts on 8/26/2012: I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed sleeping in this bed. We  stayed in a hotel several nights in the last few months and each time I tossed and turned missing my bed at home. My body has become so comfortable sleeping in my sleep number and I still have relief from the pressure points that I talked about. I simply can’t get comfortable in any other bed.

Note: Do not lose the remote or let your children play with it. My son changed my number to who knows what and lost the remote. I’ve had to sleep on a hard mattress for several weeks now and its killing me. I pray it turns up soon cause I may have to go buy another remote.
