September is National Preparedness Month. Have you taken simple steps to prepare for emergencies in your home, businesses, schools and communities. With unpredictable fall weather soon to be upon us we never know when to expect a tornado, hurricane or a blizzard. But one thing we all need to do is make sure we are prepared with safety items and water for the whole family.
It has been a year since Hurricane Irene hit New York City and reminded all of us that emergencies can happen at any time. One of the most pressing needs for New Yorkers before and during Hurricane Irene was access to timely, accurate information about essential City services, transportation disruptions and other important details.
As part of National Preparedness Month, OEM is urging New York residents to sign up for Notify NYC, the City’s official emergency notification system. Subscribers receive text messages, e-mails, phone calls or Tweets about significant citywide events, as well as smaller events happening in their own neighborhoods. These notifications cover topics such as severe weather, school closures, subway disruptions, and traffic advisories in all areas of the city. Definitely a must have resource for residents and those who travel to NYC often.
Notify NYC is critical in keeping New York City residents, families, and commuters informed, and it’s completely free to sign up! Anyone can sign up and customize the alerts they would like to receive by visiting www.nyc.gov/notifynyc or following on twitter @NotifyNYC will also give you updates. I’m currently following because I’ll be traveling to NYC in just 2 weeks. Just looking at the tweets you’ll see they also share information on traffic accidents, and when there’s movie filming or West Nile virus spraying in areas. Such a great resource.
