After seeing Disney’s Beauty and the Beast we were granted interviews with Cast members Emma Watson who plays the part of “Belle” and Dan Stevens who plays the part of “Prince Adam” and “The Beast”.  Beauty and the Beast has always been one of my favorite Disney films but now it is my ABSOLUTE Favorite. After seeing Disney’s Beauty and the Beast I know this is the movie I want my children to remember. It’s absolutely breathtakingly Memorable!

As we awaited the arrival of Emma Watson and Dan Stevens you can almost hear a pin drop. We were all super excited to meet them and couldn’t wait to start asking questions.

Emma Watson entered the room first with a huge surprised look on her face from the overwhelming welcome.

Being a big fan of Harry Potter and her character Hermione you can just imagine how I wished my daughter was sitting beside me at that very moment so she too could enjoy the company of one of her favorite actresses. Emma Watson is simply breath taking and you can just see the strength in her as she holds her self with pose and grace in this scene “Empowered Belle”.

Emma Watson is simply the perfect person to be cast’ as Belle.  She’s a great role model because she stands up for who she is and what she believes in.  Upon casting for Belle one of the things that they were looking for is if Emma Watson can sing. She had to send in an audition tape to see if she’d get the part and she did. Same things with Dan Stevens.

Before sitting down he admired the Funko Pop Beauty and the Beast Vinyl figures.

In order for Emma to get into character she had to put on the Belle peasant costume. So when she wore the costume with so many details such as a ring from her mother, bloomers to be able to ride a horse, boots that she wore, and kind of tool belt that she wore to hold books it just brought it all together.
Emma says, “Her costume was really important to me it was my way in.”

Emma had brought books to one of her first interviews with Bill Condon, the director.  Which is so fitting when you see her as “Belle” in the Beast’s library totally enamored by Books.   The fact that she her self recently started a book club is just so fitting. She even tells us that she is an English Literature Major.

SECRET TO THE BEAST COSTUME: Dan tells us that they made costumes for The Beast like really massive, giant coats, but he never actually put the Beast Costume on. He spent most of the time in a 40 lb muscle suit on stilts covered in grey lycra. He says he looked pretty odd but nothing like The Beast you see.

In that scene you can actually see just how massive The Beast stands and how really forceful he tries to be.

To capture the Beast some of the things were done separately. “Motion Capture Puppeteering of the Beast. Like the facial capture so his face would drive the beasts face. He had to step into a little booth and they’d spray 10,000 uv dots all over his face to capture his facial expressions for two weeks. They’d take that information and map it on to the Beasts face and body that he’d been working on the set. Lots of CGI was used that has never been used before so this kinda of technology is very exciting.

Emma felt very strongly about staying true to the original Beauty and the Beast that we all know.  There was actually talk about them adding in wedding at the end and she simply didn’t feel that was a good idea.  There is also a machine that they make sure is in the movie where it helps “Belle” find more time to read and to teach. That also was very important to her.

In Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, a live-action adaptation of the studio's animated classic, Emma Watson stars as Belle and Kevin Kline is Maurice, Belle's father. The story and characters audiences know and love are brought to life in this stunning cinematic event...a celebration of one of the most beloved tales ever told.

Emma wanted to make sure she protected Belle’s original DNA making sure that she kept her role as an ordinary girl and not a princess looking to marry a prince. Listen for her line in the movie where she actually says, “I am not a princess”.

How long did it take for Emma and Dan to prepare for the Iconic Waltz Scene?

Dan tells us that it was about 3 months. A lot of dance training for this. Particularly for the iconic Waltz between Belle and The Beast. It was actually a 4 step process. They learned it apart. Then they learned it together. Then Dan graduated to the stilts and then they had to graduate to the Ball Room. Because the Ball room was so huge they had to try and fill the space of the room in order to do the Waltz properly.

The Dress

  • Needed to be of the Period 17th century
  • Needed to twirl
  • She needed to ride a horse in it
  • Needed to feel like an action hero dress with a warrior element

BeautyAndTheBeast-Movie-Belle

There was a day when Emma went over to Dan’s house and they were talking about the dress and Dan’s daughter over heard and went into her room and drew 5 different designs of the dress for Emma to look at. Emma sat down with her and they picked a drawing. Then a few weeks later Dan’s daughter was on the set and saw Emma in the dress and said, “Yep, That’s the one.” So in her mind she felt that she designed the dress.

Both Emma Watson and Dan Stevens want you to know that both Girls and Boys will be taken back by Beauty and The Beast in which they will love the songs. Belle will be their greatest Hero because there’s something about the Spirit of Bell that needs to be Championed. There’s something about the spirit of Belle to see beneath the surface, she has tremendous vision.

What is so Beautiful About “Belle”…

Emma says, “What is so beautiful about Belle is that she is so non-judgmental it’s her ability to see beyond the surface of things and to understand that everyone has a story and you don’t know what that story is. Too look into things before you make a judgement. There’s a compassion and empathy there. Which is kinda  a relief.”
